My Style

Dressing down the blazer

So, today’s outfit is actually a bit of a time warp. You see, I put together this outfit a little while back…before I cut my hair…and I never did end up sharing it. If you’re wondering why my hair is about 8 inches longer in these photos, that is why!

Speaking of that, I do kind of miss my long hair. I don’t dislike my new haircut, but there are some days when I wish it was back to a length where I can style it in a bun/top knot and keep it out of my face. Now, I am lucky if all of my hair fits back into a paintbrush-esque ponytail. There are always wispy bits falling out too. *Sigh* It is what it is! I’m still not sure where I want to go from here…grow it back out a bit, or keep it short and try something with even more style. I don’t think I’m ready to go for a full-out pixie cut, but I could perhaps use a little pizazz in my hair. What do you think?

Annnnyway, back to the outfit! I think every woman should have a classic black blazer in her closet. A black blazer can be useful for work wear, but also for everyday wear! Since I don’t work in an office, my blazer tends to be used on the casual side much more often.

When you’re selecting a blazer, fit is extremely important. Make sure the shoulders hit at your natural shoulder (they shouldn’t be hanging off the side or up toward your neck), and make sure the sleeves are not too long. You can always have longer sleeves tailored to fit, or if you’re going for an everyday look, you could roll them up a turn or two to punch up the casual factor. I discovered this pretty little blazer at LOFT (previous season), and when the entire store was 50% off, I knew it was a good time to snag it. And you know I couldn’t resist one little detail on the blazer: the ruffles along the bottom! I thought they added a cute feminine twist without being over the top – love!

To dress down the blazer (which, in black, tends to be on the dressier side), I paired it with some comfortable boyfriend jeans (also from LOFT – love them!), layered a printed chiffon tank, and slipped on my favorite dalmatian print pumps.

Do you own a classic blazer? How do you style it – do you wear it both dressed up and dressed down?
