Today I make a confession: I splurged on a relatively big fashion purchase (for me, at least). Never in my life have I spent over $100 on a pair of jeans. Until now with my J.Crew Toothpick Jeans.
My Toothpick jeans from J.Crew came into my life a few weeks ago, and I’ve been wearing them constantly ever since. As much as I love shopping, jeans have been one of those items I’ve detested hunting for. Finding a pair that fit in all the right places….that was made of a material with some stretch for comfort…a pair that didn’t ride so low on the hips I’d be mistaken for a plumber. I know I’m not alone out there; why is is that jeans can be so hard for women to shop for?
But I digress. Here’s what happened: before these Toothpicks, I had two pairs of denim that I’d wear regularly (yes…only two). One is a pair of Rich & Skinny ankle jeans, and the other is a cropped pair from GAP that are a few years old and are probably on their last legs. I was feeling desperate. I was trying on pairs of jeans at every store I’d visit in the hope that one set would be the magical unicorn of perfection I was searching for. GAP: no luck. T.J. Maxx and Marshalls: no luck. LOFT: no luck. The list continued. On a whim, I dipped into J.Crew for one last attempt; I heard they recently revamped their jean material and was incredibly curious to see if they would possibly work.
Well, they fit like a glove. As soon as I zipped them up, I knew. I cringed a little when it came to pulling my credit card out (thank goodness J.Crew gives a discount to teachers though – that helped a little bit), but I am very glad I did. The material has a great amount of stretch, and they hold their shape incredibly well throughout the day. No sagging or bagging! The length of the pants for me is also perfect – I love the ankle cut of the hem. They’re great with flats, heels, and would fit well under a pair of boots in the colder months of the year. I know they are going to get an insane amount of wear, so for this purchase it was completely worth the splurge. The long life of this pair of pants will pay off in the end.
Blue chiffon pleated blouse: LOFT (similar also at LOFT) // Navy lace trim tank: LOFT (previous season) // Toothpick jeans: J.Crew // Filigree pendant: c/o Ann Taylor (similar at Nordstrom) // Envelope clutch: ASOS (previous season, similar also at ASOS) // Leopard print pumps: Ivanka Trump ‘Pinkish,’ purchased at Nordstrom (‘Sophia’ is also made by Ivanka Trump – very similar!)
Have you splurged on a particular fashion item? What was it?
I’ve never heard of toothpick jeans before. Is that a general term for skinny jeans that stop at the ankle? They look great! I don’t think I could bring myself to spend over $100 on any clothing item, though.
The Toothpick jeans are the name of this particular style at J.Crew. They also have Matchstick, which are still straight and skinny, but slightly looser than the toothpick ones! I honestly cringed a bit when I made the purchase, but now I’ve had them a few weeks and I’ve worn them probably 2 times a week since…they’re getting quite a bit of wear so far!
I think they are worth every penny if they fit you as good as they look like they do in the photo…I think you should totally buy a back-up pair! 😉
I’m telling you – I probably will have to! I am hoping there might be a sale that calls my name at some point soon…
Hi there! I just bought these in white- awesome pant! I wanted to pick your brain, though, after owning them for quite some time. I’m usually between 26/27 in J.Crew and they both fit fine in store in the Toothpick style. The woman told me they stretch a little so I should size down if i’m in between sizes. I usually have the trouble with J.Crew jeans stretching and becoming baggy which is why i sized down, but what was your experience?
Thanks!
Hey Sofia! I have to say that after owning these for over a year, they haven’t stretched out at all! I know that the denim material that I got mine in had a new fabric/stretch material combination that they had just introduced when I got them, and I could definitely tell a difference between that fabric and the others the toothpick was offered in. The material I got has definitely held up extremely well and they still fit me like a glove! 🙂
Did you happen to buy the classic Toothpick jean or the Toothpick Cone denim?
