Bathroom Renovation: Raise the Roof!

So, when I took you on a tour of our house, I pointed out the fact that our bathrooms had extremely low ceilings…and fluorescent lights installed.

They were not our cup of tea, so to say. Thankfully, with a bit of hired help we were able to increase the ceiling height by a foot. And it makes all the difference in the world to us. The fluorescent lights and huge wall mirrors were removed, new drywall was installed, and recessed lighting was put in as well. What started out as a cave of a bathroom is now much less boxed in. No more fluorescent panels in the ceiling, and where the ceiling once met the top of the shower, there is now a foot of space above. (P.S. sorry for the brightness in the “after” pictures…they’re a little blown out – whoops)

Don’t you think so?

I’m so glad we were able to get this project finished. At this point, we’ve also painted the bathroom and are thinking about taking out the shower door. I still need to find a mirror to go above the sink…of course because I am looking for one it is impossible to find a mirror I like!

So – can you see the difference? Have you dealt with fluorescent lights in your home before?

  • Much better!!! And yes, for your peace of mind and cleaning benefits, get rid of the shower door and put in glass with a half door. Let me tell you how much I HATE with a passion cleaning our shower track door. so gross…

    • Omg I HATEEEEE the dang track doors. They are on both showers right now and the thought of cleaning them constantly makes me want to die inside a little. Remove, remove, remove!

  • Wow! I can’t believe how much of a difference that made! Now I want to raise all the ceilings in our condo… 😛

    • Since that bathroom is SO tiny it really did make it feel a lot bigger…thank goodness! I felt so tall in there: the ceiling was right at the height of the door!!!!

  • If your plan is to replace the shower door with a curtain keep in mind you can paint the frame! I’m not a shower curtain fan though I think doors are much more streamline and cohesive.

Such a difference, drop ceilings suck lol

    • Yep – the plan now is to take the door off and just replace with a curtain. We actually did think about painting the frame, but the previous owners clearly did not take care of the glass on the doors…they are etched from not being cleaned regularly and are just…not good. So – we’re going to remove the doors completely so I don’t have to deal with the glass. And the track that the glass doors are on. Ohhh gosh. That makes me gag.

    • Thanks so much for the rec, Lynn! That looks really nice. We are still figuring out what to do, but we know the door is getting removed for sure! To start, we might just put up a shower curtain…for a simple solution so I don’t have to deal with cleaning the glass! That is my one dislike about glass showers…the cleaning!
