It’s funny how priorities shift as you grow older. Things that might have seemed uninteresting in the past become intriguing, things that were maybe not on top of your priority list find themselves moving higher and higher up. Now that Justin and I own our house, maintenance is no longer the responsibility of a landlord (like it was when we lived in an apartment) – it is up to us to keep our house working efficiently. We’ve been interested in making our home smarter: when I discover new tools to do so it is oh so exciting! Recently, we installed a few new products, including the Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector by Honeywell and the Lyric™ Round Wi-Fi Thermostat.
Let’s talk about this handy Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector. It’s a great first step to making your home smart, because it is extremely simple to install, and even easier to use! This detector is a way for you to monitor water-related appliances and pipes to reduce the risk of leaking and freezing. I know it might not be the first thing you think about, but coming from personal experience…you WANT to know if there is a leak in one of these places before it gets out of hand.
It just so happens that the previous owners of our house had an issue with a leak that was undetected….until a pipe burst and water spread throughout the house, damaging a large portion of the wood flooring. Yikes. You can still see the remnants of damage in one of our hallways where they replaced the wood: it doesn’t quite match the older wood. Of course, the plan is for us to eventually replace the flooring, but for now it stays the way it is! However, Justin and I are SO worried about the same situation unfolding a second time, so keeping track of our pipes is SO important to us. We want to stop a leak before it becomes a major issue!
We decided to install the Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector in our spare bathroom. This was the previous location of the leak, so we thought it would be important to keep an eye out. Plus, we installed a new bathroom vanity recently and I would be devastated if was damaged due to leakage.
The detector comes as one convenient device with up to three years of AA battery life. Since it runs on your home’s wi-fi there is no need for an additional hub! There is a four-foot long water sensing cord included you can utilize – simply place it around objects and along floors, cracks, and other spaces. You can even extend it with additional cable sensors for up to 500 feet of continuous coverage if you need it! You can set up the Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector (which took me less than 5 minutes from start to finish – the Quick Start Guide included in the kit was very straightforward and simple to use), put it in place, and then all you need to do is monitor it through the Lyric™ smartphone and tablet app. It provides an early warning system to homeowners in and out of the home: there is a loud 100 dB siren for those in the home, and mobile alerts are delivered to your smartphone or tablet. How easy is that? Super easy, I say!
Another great feature of Honeywell’s Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector is that it can be used multiple times! Once it senses water it can be reset to continue monitoring for future water and moisture problems: you just need to wipe it clear of moisture and debris and replace the batteries before using it again! You can find the Lyric™ Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector on the Honeywell website or at The Home Depot.
The move to making our home a smart home is not just about being able to use our smartphones to turn the air conditioning up and down – it is about monitoring our home. I love that you can obtain data through the Lyric™ app. It gives me peace of mind that I can log into the Lyric™ app on my smartphone and not only see the information about the temperature of my home, the humidity level in the area where my Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector is, but I can also make adjustments even if I’m out of the house. There are SO many times in the past where Justin has called me on his way to work asking me to turn up the thermostat because he forgot to before he left. How much do you hate it when you return home and realize your air conditioner has been running non-stop when you were away…those little mistakes add up to higher bills, and when you live in Florida like we do the air conditioner hikes your bill up quite a bit in the first place (I think ours runs about 10 of the 12 months of the year).
I no longer have to worry about running my air conditioning non-stop now that we have the Lyric™ Thermostat in our home. The Lyric™ thermostat uses your smartphone location and can automatically adjust the temperature as you come and go throughout the day – delivering comfort when you’re home and savings when you’re away. Justin and I have found it SO amazing to see it in action: we set a geofencing area around our home: when both of our phones are outside that area, the temperature on our thermostat rises: when we enter back into the area it lowers back down to our “at home” temperature. If we want to adjust even more than that, we can always log into our Lyric™ app and set a custom temperature.
Installation of the thermostat was a DIY situation – Justin had it up and running in less than an hour. I also like how small and sleek it looks when mounted on the wall – our old thermostat was a bit of an eyesore, truth be told! The setup went through the Lyric™ app – just a few easy steps to get everything ready to go (alongside our Lyric™ Water Leak and Freeze Detector). You can read more on the Lyric™ Thermostat web page, and watch a video here!
So – who else wants to make their home a smart home? Which Honeywell smart device could you see yourself using in the future?
