I’m playing a bit of catch up with what I’ve been reading recently. I’m happy to report that this book marked my 12th book of my 12 books in 2012 challenge – yay! And, I’ve already completed a 13th book and am almost finished with my 14th. I suppose that means I’ll have to up my goal for 2013, huh?
Anyway, my 12th book was Divergent by Veronica Roth. I’d been hearing a buzz about this trilogy from a number of others, so I was intrigued to check it out. Plus, after finishing the Hunger Games trilogy I’ve been kind of hoping to find another book that sucked me in.
Divergent takes place in a dystopian Chicago. Citizens are separated into five different factions…each corresponding to a certain virtue that the members find important (and cultivate) – Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Dauntless (the brave), and Erudite (the intelligent). Children live with their families in their faction until their 16th year, when on one day all 16 year olds must select the faction that they choose to be a part of for the rest of their lives.
Beatrice must decide between staying with her family in the Abnegation faction or choosing another world where she can be true to herself. After her selection, Beatrice not only changes her name, but has to go through a rigorous initiation period. She has to make new friends, learn new ways, and go through physical tests.
…but that is not all. Beatrice has a secret. A secret that could mean certain death for her. But it also holds the key to her ability to protect and save the ones she loves when unrest forms in their society.
Overall, I enjoyed Divergent. This is another teen literature selection, so to reading is quick and easy. The storyline moves at a fast pace, and the book ends with you wanting more…aka the 2nd book in the trilogy (which I have with me right now and will start reading soon). Is it better than the Hunger Games trilogy? Nope, but it definitely is a good read and it has my attention! Plus, I’ve heard that the movie rights have been sold and filming will start in early 2013…so it’s always fun to read a book before the movie version comes out! If you’re looking for an easy, exciting read, add Divergent to your to-read list!
Have you read any of the books in the Divergent trilogy yet? What do you think?
…and follow me on Goodreads!
I’ve read Divergent and Insurgent. I enjoyed Divergent, but felt Insurgent sort of dragged on a bit. I did like the ending however and am now anxiously awaiting Fall 2013 for the third book.
I’ll be interested to get in to Insurgent to see how that goes…I’m so stubborn and will have to continue the series just because I started it! Lol!
I recently read these as well. I adored Divergent, I didn’t love Insurgent quite as much, but I’m still looking forward to the third book. I have to say I think I enjoyed the books more just for all the Chicago references, it made the whole thing so easy to picture in my mind.
Ah…living in Chicago would definitely make the books relevant I’d think! I’m a bit more than halfway through Insurgent right now…still forming my opinions! My biggest problem is that for some reason I can’t picture the characters in my head. I usually am able to “cast” an actress/actor I know in my head as I go along, and I can’t pinpoint ones for Tris and Tobias. It will be interesting to see who gets cast in the roles for the movie!
