The Execution of Noa P. Singleton

I know we still have 4 months left of 2013 but I am going to be bold and make a statement: I just finished reading my favorite book of the year.

the execution of noa p singleton

When I read a short description on The Execution of Noa P. Singleton (by Elizabeth L. Silver) before the book was released a few months ago, I was immediately drawn in. When my name came up on the wait list at my library, I couldn’t wait to get started. I promptly opened the pages and immersed myself. I…could…not…put…this…book…down. The plot, the pace, and the characters were all intriguing, and it was really a page turner.

The Execution of Noa P. Singleton is a story about a woman (Noa) who is placed on death row. The book revisits her past, what led to her incarceration (and sentencing), and explores the question of why or why not Noa wants the truth behind it all to come out. The mother of the woman Noa murdered, Marlene Dixon, happens to be a powerful attorney, and six months before Noa is to serve her death sentence, Marlene comes forward to open a clemency petition on Noa’s behalf…in order to find out the truth behind what happened to her daughter.

The story is filled with twists and turns, and I enjoyed not being prepared for all of them as they presented themselves. I really appreciated Elizabeth L. Silver’s storytelling and how she was able to make me feel for the different characters in such conflicting ways. From the start, you know that Noa is indeed guilty of murder; she is not on death row by mistake. However, there is a depth to her story that does make you think about Noa’s situation. There is guilt and remorse, there are secrets from the past, and the like.

Honestly – pick up a copy of this book if you’re a fan of suspense, you like a mystery, and are looking for a book that will keep you guessing from start to finish. And if you’re like me, you’ll get from front to back in only a few days’ time.

What is the best book you’ve read so far this year?
