There is something really lovely about simplicity when it comes to food. Yes, I can enjoy dishes that are filled with complex ingredients and impressive presentation, but sometimes all you need are a few simple items to make a delicious treat.
Fresh tomato, basil, and mozzarella: does it get better than that? Yes: if you add a drizzle of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and a touch of salt and pepper. So simple, yet so ridiculously delicious. Add a hunk of crusty bread and a glass of wine and you have perfection.
On a random side note: I would never have eaten this combination a few years ago. I would eat cooked tomatoes, but never raw. Balsamic vinegar? No thank you. Now: bring them on! Isn’t it funny how taste buds/palate can expand and change over the years? I like so many more things nowadays than I would back in high school (or even college).
What is YOUR favorite simple food pairing?
this is my favorite snack or meal. i am a really simple (and picky; i mean particular 🙂 ) eater. YUM. now i want some right now.
I LOVE caprese and ate it all the time when I had fresh basil growing in my kitchen. For me, though, nothing is better than delicious bread and delicious butter. When I used to ask my mom what her favorite food was, she would tell me that she would be happy to eat nothing but french bread and butter for the rest of her life. I didn’t get it then, but I certainly get it now.
Yummm. Bread is one of those things I wish I could eat all the time too! Especially when it is crusty and you can dip it in olive oil/balsamic/herbs…
Capreses are probably my favorite simple food combination too. In fact one weekend in San Diego I ate it 3 times. It’s one of the few things I can eat at Italian restaurants and it’s one of my favorite dishes, so that works out well 🙂
Mmm, caprese salad. One of my faves!
I love this dish! Looks so delicious. My favorite simple dish is probably a salad my husband and I make with homemade dressing. Or just some watermelon with a little bit of salt. Yum!
this sounds really yummy : )
We’re obsessed with caprese here. So much so that we’ve already gone through two basil plants in our hotel room! They’re wicked cheap, which is awesome. If you like a little bit of spice, look for some olive oil with peppers on it. It’s called peperoncino and it’s ahhhhmazing!
Oh man, basil is amazing. I wish I could have some plants growing here; I can’t wait until we can have a garden…get me out of this apartment!!!
This is one of the best simple combinations out there!
totally agree, major yum! my simple meal? publix greenwise pizzas. haha, not really home made but man, they’re good!
Mmm pizza. Any shape and form…always delicious! I’ve had the Greenwise pizzas a few times: the spinach and feta one is yum!!!
Yum! I love that pairing as well! I also love cantaloupe and prosciutto. 🙂
I always wish I could eat that one because it sounds so yummy! Darn my cantaloupe allergy… 🙁
That’s my favorite, too! And just like you, I never would have eaten it five years ago. Can’t believe how much I missed!
Indeed! I also didn’t eat avocado when I was younger. WHAT was I thinking!?!?!?
