I have to admit: sometimes I get frustrated with the selection of spices available at the grocery store. The store shelves can do the trick for certain basics, but if I’m looking for something unique or out of the ordinary, it can be hard to come across.
I recently was introduced to an amazing shop in St. Petersburg – the Savory Spice Shop. After a stroll through the Saturday Morning Market, Justin, my mom, and I stopped in to peruse the offerings. And oh my, were we impressed.
As soon as you walk in, your eyes are met with shelves upon shelves immaculately arranged with jars of spices, rubs, salts, and more. I literally did not know where to start, so we worked our way around the shop carefully surveying. Each spice in the shop is available to smell (and taste too). There are barrels filled with cinnamon sticks, and wooden crates filled with star anise for you to scoop. It’s pretty fantastic.
It wasn’t long before Justin and I had accumulated a basket of goods to purchase. We selected one of their signature spice blends (their best seller, actually), and a Peruvian Chile Lime seasoning to start. We’ve used the blend already on grilled chicken and I was absolutely blown away by the quality and layers of flavor brought forth.
Another item I absolutely could not leave the shop without was Savory Spice Shop’s Italian Black Truffle Salt. Yes, it is as amazing as it sounds. The aroma alone is rich with truffle, and the flavor literally made my eyes roll back in my head. I already have an obsession with truffle oil on my popcorn…now it has turned to truffle salt instead. That bottle of salt is worth every penny I spent on it…no joke.
One of the other offerings at Savory Spice Shop I loved was their pre-made Recipes To Go. Each package contains pre-portioned spices and a recipe for how to create the dish. I really think these would make an amazing stocking stuffer at the holidays, or just a nice small gift to give to a friend. There are drink-related recipes as well as meals – a nice variety!
If you happen to be in the St. Petersburg area, definitely make time to pop into Savory Spice Shop. Even though it’s a bit of a trek for me, I know I’ll be heading down there again to replenish my spices and accumulate more over time!
That is right up my mama’s alley. Totally taking her there! Great feature!
Mike and I went there the other day too! What an awesome spice shop. I’ll be going there for those unique spices you can’t find anywhere else.
