Everything Else

My DVR might explode

So…Fall TV…it’s started!

I’m getting a little nervous for my DVR. At the beginning of the season, I usually put my DVR through the ringer. There are the tried and true series that I’m devoted to, the series that I might not love quite so much but record them and watch when I get a free moment, and there are the new series I feel compelled to try out. I give the new shows a one episode test. If they catch my interest, they might just get added to the permanent schedule. Otherwise I abandon them immediately. As I was setting up my DVR yesterday I felt a bit ashamed at how many programs I have scheduled. Seriously, I’m out of control. Here’s what I have going on:

Tried and True Shows

  • How I Met Your Mother: One of my all-time favorite shows. I want to be best friends with Marshall and Lily in real life
  • Modern Family: If you aren’t already watching it, what is wrong with you? That is all
  • Happy Endings: My favorite new show from last season! The writing is so funny; I love it
  • Dexter: Duh. Awesomeness
  • The Office: Anyone want to guess who the new Regional Manager is going to be? I have no clue, but I am SO glad that James Spader, aka Robert California, will be back!
  • House: I’ve been watching for years. And this season starts with House in jail; I’m interested
  • Fringe: I really enjoy this one; all of the creepy/quirky cases, and Walter Bishop cracks me up
  • Walking Dead: We enjoyed the first season, and now that I randomly ran into Andrew Lincoln in Trader Joe’s, I must keep watching
  • Project Runway: The season is already half through right now, but it is one of my all-time favorites
  • Top Chef: I don’t know when the new season (in TX) will start, but I’ll be watching!

I’ll Watch Them When I Get a Minute

  • 2 1/2 Men: Justin loves this show, but I was getting sick of Charlie Sheen. Well, now that Ashton Kutcher has joined the cast, I’m interested to see what happens
  • Biggest Loser: it’s a guilty pleasure. I also tend to be watching it as I eat ice cream at night. Jillian Michaels would be ashamed
  • Glee: It isn’t on my must-watch list. You Gleeks out there might hate me for saying this, but I really think that the first season was the best…it has lost my interest after that point. I watch it still, but the episodes tend to pile up before I go through and watch them

New Shows to Try

  • 2 Broke Girls: I haven’t watched last night’s episode yet, but I was hearing good things on Twitter!
  • Playboy Club: no reason, just because it’s new
  • New Girl: because it looks cute/funny
  • Unforgettable: I loved Dylan Walsh as Dr. Sean McNamara on Nip/Tuck…so I kind of want to see how his new show is
  • X Factor: 1 episode. I repeat: 1 episode. I don’t watch American Idol, so I don’t have high hopes for liking this one any more
  • Revenge: again, just because it’s new
  • Person of Interest: It’s the actor who played Benjamin Linus on Lost! I love him: gotta give him a chance
  • PanAm: I think this one looks interesting! We’ll see
  • Hart of Dixie: Rachel Bilson is adorable. I don’t know that I have high hopes for the show though
  • Suburgatory: This one looks pretty funny I think
  • American Horror Story: Tami Taylor (aka Connie Britton)! I just love her, and I always like scary movies/shows so I want to check it out

Whew, see what I mean? My DVR is going to start smoking from all the use it will be getting in the next few weeks. Yikes!

What are your tried and true TV shows? Which new TV show are you most looking forward to this season?

  • We may have you beat, I run 2 DVRS (I’m so ashamed), I even set up a grid in Word at the beginning of each season so I can make sure everything is getting taped. I cut way back last year but have picked up a few new shows again this year. The only new one I’ve watched so far is Ringer and it was pretty good. My biggest issue is Sundays, seriously, every show I like is on at 9pm.

    • 2 DVRs!?!? I’m jealous. Seriously. That would help so much…haha! Baseball season is still going, so we are going to have to abandon it in order to record the tv shows!

  • Ugh! I have the same issue. Right now I still have a bunch of episodes of “Switched at Birth” which really grew on me after awhile and Secret Circle & The Ringer. I, too, am interested in PanAm and Hart of Dixie. Also want to watch Once Upon a Time on ABC, and I might be done. I’m a season behind on 30 Rock & Parks & Rec but that’s kind of how we do things with the NBC shows so we can see them one after another. I have to get on that!

I’m glad I’m not alone. I also like Biggest Loser & Dancing, and the Yankees are on. My TV might explode. 🙂

  • Our DVR is getting a work out this week! We’ll see what lasts but we have a bunch of the same tried and true (Modern Family, Happy Endings, The Office, HIMYM, Walking Dead, Project Runway, Top Chef. Some of our other favs are Sons of Anarchy, Parenthood, Criminal Minds, Vampire Diaries & The Mentalist.

I’m trying to give some of the new shows some love (2 Broke Girls, Person of Interest, Revenge, New Girl, Ringer, & Up All Night). Good thing for DVR and Free On Demand.

    • I’ve heard that Parenthood is GREAT! I wish I would have started watching it from the get-go…I might have to pick it up somehow via Netflix or something!

  • haha love this. I had a similar post last week because I’m so excited for premiere week! My DVR is also exploding. My top never miss shows are: Gossip Girl, NCIS, Rachel Zoe, and Parks and Rec. Then there are my when i have time: Glee, Modern Family, How I Met your Mother. Then there are ones I want to at least watch the premiere of to test it out like: Pan Am, 2 Broke Girls, X Factor, Suburgatory, Charlies Angels, oh and Whitney because I love her as a comedien. then there’s the miscellaneous tv that I find myself watching inconsistently at random times: Dancing with the Stars, the Kardashians, Millionaire Matchmaker, and all the Real Housewives.
What’s better than TV to find escape in during the cold fall/winter months while we wait for summer again, right? 😉

  • hahah – your list is pretty much exactly the same as mine. did you catch HIMYM last night? so so good and i cannot wait for modern family and happy endings – wow. i am addicted to tv… 🙂

  • Lol wow that is a lot of shows!

We have 4 tried and true shows and 1 new one we want to try.

    Tried and True
    How I Met Your Mother
Big Bang Theory – We are both engineers and love the geeky humor.
BONES – This is our absolute favorite we even named all our tables at our wedding after bones keywords.
Shark Tank – This is our newest one, its a great discussion show.

    NEW
New Girl – Mostly because Zooey is the sister of the Bones main character and it looks funny.

We love our DVR too, I do not know what we would do without it!

  • I feel bad for our DVR, too. Plus, we had a power surge (the surge protector failed) so our entire hard drive was wiped. I had to try and remember what shows aired on what nights so I could reprogram everything! Is it sad that I’m worried about missing a show? Probably.

I like Parenthood a lot – definitely my favorite new show from last season. I have high hopes for sitcoms, especially Up All Night and New Girl. My husband tends to watch those more than the dramas I like, so finding something we agree on this season is top priority!

  • I totally agree. I have SOO many shows on there right now! I just watched all the Happy endings from last year and I’m so glad I did. They were hilarious! I would also add Rules of Engagement-which is now on Saturday’s (kiss of death for a show), sooo funny! The normal shows, Gossip Girl, How I met your mother, Mike and Molly, Grey’s, Private Practice. The list goes on and on!

  • Ohh man, Fall TV premiere week. It’s pretty much the happiest time of year for me. Watching TV is one of my favorite pastimes, so I get easily hooked.

    Tried and True:
    HIMYM
    Vampire Diaries
One Tree Hill (doesn’t start until the middle of the season, but I’m watching that until the bitter end)
    Bones
    Castle
    Glee
Sing-Off (my friend from college is on it! Go Urban Method)
    Community
    Parks and Rec
    30 Rock
    Private Practice
Amazing Race (again, doesn’t start for a bit, but one of my favorites)
    The Good Wife
    Chuck

    If I Have Time:
    NCIS, NCIS LA
    Grey’s Anatomy
    Hawaii Five-O

New Shows I Might Get Into:
2 Broke Girls (hilarious, but I hated the laugh track)
Ringer (SMG- need I say more?)
Up All Night ( I love every single actor in this show)
Playboy Club (I want to live back then)

Geez, that’s a lot. Hello, My name is Nina and I’m a TV addict.

  • Sadly, my TV scheduling is a bit jacked, being down here, where they just don’t have some networks, or some are dubbed and therefore just not the same.

Here is what I would be watching if I could:
How I Met Your Mother (I am actually catching up on all the old seasons, but hope to make it to real time and watch streaming soon!)

House (ditto what I’m doing with HIMYM)

Project Runway-I am loving this season so much. I think 50% of why I watch is to listen to Michael Kors talk-cracks me up SO much. Who are your favorites this season? I love Anya and Anthony Ryan and Laura. And sometimes Josh. ha.

Top Chef-I love it so much and am excited it will be in Texas! I don’t have Bravo at all, so I’m hoping I can figure something out.

Bethenny Ever After-Okay I know this is ridiculous, but I just love her. No shame.

New Girl- I could see this being an awesome show or kind of a let down. Love Zooey, though.

Up All Night- If it isn’t dubbed, I’m gonna give it a try

  • I haven’t even heard of half of those shows! My top watches are Top Chef, Glee, Survivor, Big Bang Theory, Always Sunny, Grey’s Anatomy, Walking Dead…I think there are more, but I leave my DVD to remember lol

  • Wow you watch a ton of TV! I just don’t have time for TV between my hubs & friends, work and school. If I’m home and writing a paper I can have the TV on for background noise but honestly, I use Hulu or other web based programs to catch up on something if I’ve heard its really good. I guess I need to never get a DVR – because I don’t have enough hours in the day to watch that much TV!

    • Thankfully, the “must watch” shows are pretty much just 30 minute ones (which only take about 20 minutes when you get rid of the commercials). But yeah, I don’t have that much time to watch TV either, hence the DVR! At any given time, it is about 75% or so full. There are a few shows that we watch on the same day that they air, but for the most part, I just let them tape and when we get a free moment we will watch them. Most of those new series I’ll watch the first episode and that will be the end of it…haha!
