Our Adoption

We’re Adopting!

You may or may not have noticed that things have been a little on the quiet side over on the site for the past few months. Although there hasn’t been much activity on the website, I assure you: there has been a LOT going on behind the scenes. I feel like I’ve been holding on to a big secret for a few months now. Seeing as today is Valentine’s Day, it feels like a day to be spreading some love around. It’s finally time for me to let the cat out of the bag: we’re adopting!

Yep: that’s right! Justin and I are currently in the middle of the adoption process. The past few months have been filled with research, paperwork, and training. Oh, and a TON of excitement as well! The crazy part is: we’re only part of the way through the process at this point. We wanted to wait to spill the beans until we were a little further along, because the adoption journey can sometimes take quite a while (12-18 months on average). It’s been incredibly difficult to keep this a secret, but now we’re finally ready to share it with the world.

I realize there are probably a million questions that you may have regarding adoption, and it would probably be impossible for me to answer them all at once. To start, I wanted to lay out some answers to a couple of the most common questions:

Q: What is the time frame?

A: It is impossible to lock down a specific time for when our baby will join our family, but on average a domestic adoption through our agency takes 12-18 months. Right now Justin and I have paid a few initial fees, attended a 2 day training, and are finishing up some paperwork before we have our home study. After our home study is complete, there will be another portion of money due so we can become a “waiting family.” Once that happens, we could be matched at any point going forward. We are hoping to be a waiting family by the summer.

Q: Where will the child be from? Will it be a boy or girl? How old?

A: We will be pursuing a domestic adoption of an infant through Bethany Christian Services of Florida. Most likely our future baby will be born in the state of Florida! We don’t know if it will be a boy or a girl: that will be something we’ll find out later on!

Q: How can we support you?

A: First and foremost: prayers, positive vibes, good thoughts. Prayers that we will continue to prepare our hearts and our home for this future child. Prayers that we will continue to find the means to afford this adoption. Any happy thoughts and prayers you want to send our way: we want them! Just knowing that our community of friends and family are excited and supporting us is incredible.

Second: give. It feels 100% awkward to even put the topic of money out there, but the reality is the adoption process is not inexpensive. Our adoption will cost around $30,000 when all is said and done. Thankfully, we pay in certain installments. Right now our focus is to get up to and through the home study costs, which will be a little under $14,000. The remainder of the fees are due when our child is placed with us, which will be another $13,000. Whether that will be 2 weeks later or 1 year later, we will not know.

If you’re wondering how to contribute financially, there are a few ways. We have created a fundraising site with Pure Charity where you can make a tax-deductible donation. The funds will be directly transferred to our adoption agency.

You can visit our fundraising site HERE

Alternately, if you’d like to go straight to the source and donate to our agency, that is another option. You can contact the Bethany Christian Services of Florida office directly and request to donate to our family’s adoption. If you’d like to do that, don’t hesitate to ask me any questions.

One other note: if you are someone who sees me or Justin in person, don’t feel awkward asking us questions about adoption. We realize the process is one that not everyone is familiar with, and we are more than happy to share what we’ve learned and how it is going for us.

Make sure you check back over time as well – I plan on posting updates as we continue our journey to adoption! And maybe once I emerge from behind our huge stack of paperwork I can get back to crafting, cooking, and more for the site once again!
