It’s the first week of Sunday Supper in 2013, and we’re tackling items off of our recipe bucket lists! It is the beginning of the year, so why not start it by tackling something you’ve always wanted to create in the kitchen? Today, I’m taking on Popcorn with truffle oil and asiago cheese.
It took me some time to think about what kind of recipe I would take on for this particular challenge. There are so many different recipes I’ve wanted to challenge myself with over the years. However, I wanted to start the year off right with a combination of a “bucket list” item and a resolution of sorts for 2013, Good combination, right?
One of the things I’m hoping to accomplish in the kitchen for 2013 is to make more “simple items” homemade. I want to make an effort to make my own tomato sauce instead of jarred sauce…make my own salsa instead of pre-packaged. One of my favorite snacks of all time is popcorn. I go through a ton of bags of microwave popcorn. Why don’t I make it myself?
Â
Thankfully, I was gifted with a hot air popcorn popper for Christmas, and my quest for fresh popcorn was one step closer for me. I was thrilled to have the hot air popper so I could get fresh popcorn without the oil and butter. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t add to my popcorn. So – I bought a canister of white popcorn kernels (P.S. if you live in an area with Publix, they canisters of kernels go on BOGO – around $5 for two packages, which will be much more quantity than the microwave bags for the same price) and got to work. I know for a fact that I will be creating new and amazing flavor combinations as time goes on. As much as plain popcorn is awesome on its own, adding some simple “fixins” to the bowl is a taste treat.
This combination is seriously my new addiction. I’m not kidding when I say addiction. I may or may not have made a bowl of this popcorn 3 times in the past week. Don’t judge me. First of all – the truffle oil spritzer is key. I have recently become a huge fan of the flavor of truffle oil. I found a spritzer bottle of white truffle oil at HomeGoods and knew it would be perfect for popcorn. As the popcorn spills out of the hot air popper, I spritz the kernels with the truffle oil and a pinch or two of salt.
And then – the kicker. The popcorn is wonderful with the truffle oil and salt. However, add a sprinkle of fresh grated asiago cheese?!?!? The tangy zip of the asiago mixed with the rich flavor of the truffle oil is such a taste treat. You have to do this. Seriously. Don’t walk…run to your nearest store with a hot air popcorn popper and buy one for your kitchen. You can thank me later.
Popcorn with Truffle Oil and Asiago Cheese
- ½ cup unpopped popcorn kernels
- White truffle oil
- Salt, to taste
- ¼ cup fresh grated asiago cheese
- Pop the popcorn kernels according to hot air popper instructions into a large bowl. If you don't have a hot air popper, you can also use microwave popcorn (not buttered - plain, and dump contents into a large bowl).
- As the popcorn is dispensing into the bowl, spritz lightly with truffle oil and a few small pinches of salt. Toss gently to combine thoroughly. When popcorn is finished dispensing, top with grated asiago cheese. Enjoy!

Truffle oil spritzer! What a great find, Katie.
And Asiago seems to be a preferred cheese of gourmet chefs like Bobby Flay. So with the combo of popcorn, truffle oil and Asiago, how could such a snack not be addicting.
Great Ruffles & Truffles invention. Maybe you could sell it?
P.s. I admire your conviction to make your own homemade tomato sauce =)
Okay, so…we pop all of our popcorn on the stove. This started a few years back when I got fed up with microwave popcorn – it popped like half a bag or burnt it or some combination thereof. And the thing is – it’s so simple! But you and I are soul sisters on this topping, it is my hands-down favorite. The only difference is that I use Parm, just because I always have it in the house, but I know I’d love it equally with Asiago. Oh, and just because I can’t help myself, I also use truffle sea salt. Oi. So freakin’ delicious. And now you’ve made me want some. For lunch (I’ll do it). 😉
(you can see my post about our shared delight here, if you like: http://www.girlichef.com/2012/02/i-popcorn-food-matters-project.html)
Using parmesan with the popcorn is a great option too, and is probably what I’d do on most days if I don’t have a wedge of asiago around. And I want to have some truffle sea salt now…..
I discovered truffle oil a while ago, and can´t believe how it can completely change a bowl of rice or pasta. Over popcorn with a good cheese, it can´t get much better!
Isn’t it amazing?!?! I was a skeptic a little while back, thinking people were just saying they liked it to be fancy…but dang is it good!
Oh lord, I’m drooling. DROOLING!!!
Oh I need to make this. This looks absolutely amazing and clearly beats any popcorn I have ever made.
We make all ours on the stove but I would love to have an air topper! Beautiful photos.
You are in for a treat when you make your own pasta sauce and salsa too. This popcorn looks so good. My wife makes popcorn in our Cuisinart popcorn popper that comes out perfect every time.
Yum…I adore truffle fries, so I’m sure this would be amazing too! Thanks for sharing…
I’ve made my own salsa and pasta sauce before, but it has never become a regular practice for some reason! I definitely want to make it a point to do it more…no excuses!
What a great combination! I love Asiago and the spritz of truffle oil adds a gourmet touch! I need to invest in an air popper–I usually use a paper bag and microwave.
Love truffle popcorn but never had it with asiago, brilliant!!
Like all your recipes, these look simple and elegant. Would love to try this. So much flavor and looks so wholesome. Yummm !
I love anything with truffle oil! Ever since Ciro’s where we sampled their popcorn with truffle oil, I have had a love affair with that stuff! SO GOOD.
I know, right?!?!?! I have never gotten that flavor out of my head since that time. I love truffle oil!!!
Truffle oil spritzer! Ooooh boy I GOTTA get that for my husband!
Such an easy idea, right? I guess you could make your own with a spray bottle and a bottle of truffle oil as well…and I might have to do that in the future. It gets just the right amount of oil on the popcorn…I know if I had to drizzle it I’d end up with really oily popcorn!
Oh, yum, yum, yummy! I have truffle salt AND truffle oil AND asiago in the house! I bet I could make some darned tasty popcorn!!!!
PS…I’m going to make my next zebra cake with oil. Fingers crossed it finally works!
That is some seriously posh popcorn – I am adding it to my bucket list! Gorgeous photos.
What a great combo! I love this idea. Thanks for sharing : )
Sounds like a great combo, Katie!
Amazing Katie! Hope you saved me some!
Oooh, tres fancy pants. Would be perfect for nibblies on Oscar night
Drooling! I feel another popcorn party coming on!
When I saw that you were going to make popcorn without the microwave, I got excited cause I thought you’d do it old school in a pot like I did a few weeks ago. I would’ve given my right arm for an air popper, lol. This popcorn sounds so amazing – I love the idea that you can make it without any butter and can add whatever flavouring you want. That way it can be as healthy (or not) as you like. I love your popcorn container too – super cute!
Thanks! I haven’t tried it on the stove before, but I think that does sound fun! The hot air popper I got was an Orville Redenbacher’s one…I think it was less than $30…not too bad! It’s amazing how well it pops the kernels too – never burned and there are usually only about 5-10 unpopped kernels that spill out. And I love that I can make as much or as little as I want with the machine, instead of making an entire bag of microwave popcorn and feeling like I need to eat it all!
Yes. Yes. This needs to happen! I’ve got it all at home (well except I pop on the stove!) hmmm.. . I think I’ll make this next time I got to the movies and take my big purse!
I’m totally planning on bringing a bag of my own popcorn next time I go to the movies: no shame!!!
Did you know that you don’t need a hot air popper or even microwave popcorn? you just need kernels and a brown paper sack. that’s it. you just pop it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes and voila, you have popcorn. fresh grated asiago cheese and truffle oil, awesome combo. check this out: http://www.eatingrules.com/2011/01/the-dirty-little-secret-of-microwave-popcorn/
I’ve seen people do that before; pretty neat! I personally like my hot air popper since it doesn’t create any trash, but if I didn’t have it I would be taking the stove top or microwaving in a paper bag route for sure!
This popcorn sounds divine!
I need to be on the look out for a truffle oil spritzer… actually I happen to be going to HomeGoods this afternoon so I will keep my eyes open.
I was just at Home Goods yesterday, now I need to go back to see if I can find that oil. It sounds incredible on popcorn – love making my own popcorn!
I have to find one of those spritzers! I really want to try making regular popcorn in the mircrowave in a paper bag, since I don’t have a popper.
I want to try it that way too, just for fun! The popper was a great little gift…I think it was under $30 for the Orville Redenbacher’s version. And, buying the popcorn kernels by the jar gets you so many more kernels/servings…saving money!
Wow! What a combo! I’d love to try it. Now I will be sure to check out the gourmet aisle of my local Home Goods too! #SuperFind!
Can you believe I call myself a foodie/blogger and I have never tried truffle or truffle oil? I need to rectify this real quick. popcorn, cheese and truffyle oil sounds amazing.
I hadn’t had truffle oil anything until last year – you aren’t behind the times!
