Cooking with Kids: Popcorn Party on a Plate!

Are you ready for a popcorn party?

Last week, it was all about the popcorn during our Sweet Treats class. There is something seriously fun about popcorn…the anticipation that comes while waiting for the kernels to pop…watching the tiny little kernels blossom into fluffy white forms…and of course, eating some of the tasty snack!

As much as I love having savory flavors on my popcorn (truffle oil, anyone?), this class was all about the sweet side! We created a “popcorn party on a plate!”

Thankfully, this recipe is quick, easy, and really fun for kids to get involved with. To start, we popped the popcorn! We used white corn and my handy dandy air popper, but you could use a microwave bag (just not the butter variety) or store bought bag. Kettle corn would be another variety that would taste great…the added sweetness would be a nice touch!

Once your popcorn is popped, make sure to remove all of the unpopped kernels from the container you used. No one wants to bite down on a kernel and break a tooth! Next, place a baking sheet in front of you and line it with wax paper. Spread a single layer of the popcorn on top of the wax paper to prepare it for the fun part!

In the microwave, melt some white chocolate candy melts (or white baking chocolate of your choice) according to package instructions. I usually microwave for 30 second increments until the chocolate begins to melt, stirring each time. If you’re wondering how much chocolate to melt, I typically tend to microwave in small batches and assess my need for more as I go. With this recipe, you can always add more if it looks like you need it! Anyway, once the chocolate is melted, I added about 2 drops of red food coloring to turn the white chocolate pink…but feel free to use any color that suits your fancy!

To drizzle the popcorn, dip a fork into the melted white chocolate and use the tines to drizzle the chocolate over the popcorn. The kids loved to get in on this part of the process…there might have been a little chocolate flying in the air though! That’s ok!

When the chocolate is drizzled, begin sprinkling! You can add whatever candy you desire, but for our popcorn party we used mini M&Ms and rainbow sprinkles. Try to sprinkle the candy pieces onto the drizzled chocolate so they stick…but it isn’t 100% necessary for them to do so! When the popcorn is fully sprinkled with goodies, set aside and allow the chocolate to set (you can also pop the popcorn into the refrigerator for a few minutes to speed up the process. Slide the popcorn off of the tray to serve (and break up larger pieces if they have stuck together). Enjoy!

Are you a fan of popcorn parties? Do you prefer sweet or savory popcorn?
