Introducing: Our New Master Bathroom and Bedroom Remodel

Confession: I’ve somehow managed to sit on this post for a little bit longer than I should have. Time got away from me. But it’s finally time for me to show a little before and after of our house renovation. Introducing: our new master bathroom and bedroom remodel!

We have been talking about a revamp of this space ever since we moved in a few years ago. Our bedroom floor was covered with carpet, which was just a disguise for the water damaged hardwood floors below. I know some people love carpet, but I am NOT a fan. It catches dog hair, dirt, allergens, and is just a pain in the butt to maintain. I much prefer a hard floor that I can easily vacuum and mop. It was such a DELIGHT to see the carpet ripped up, rolled up, and removed from our house.

Let’s talk about a few more details that I was excited to improve upon. The bathroom vanity, to start. Oh boy, how I despised that thing. The sink was mounted above the counter, which made it a pain in the butt to clean. It was a cheaper vanity, with a veneer that was peeling back in some places. The previous owners had drilled holes in the side to mount a toilet paper holder…but they drilled in the wrong place the first time so there was just a set of holes in the side of the vanity. Ugh.

Don’t get me started on the tile on the walls. I am not a fan, and the peachy, flesh colored tiles were just too much for the small space. Whoever had tiled it previously didn’t do the best of jobs either – they were somewhat uneven/not flush to the wall in some places.

And the shower? The horror. The gold plated track/frame? YUUUUCK! Cleaning it was terrible, and the shower glass was etched horribly thanks to non-softened water and what was probably little upkeep from previous owners. I tried so many times to remove the buildup, but that glass was permanently foggy in appearance no matter what I did. The tile inside was all the way up the walls AND on the ceiling of the shower. Danger. We had a number of different contractors come through our house to give us an estimate on the work, and one of them in particular was telling me a story of how a potential customer of his DIED because a tile in the ceiling of her shower fell and cracked her in the head before he was able to come to her house to do the work. Needless to say, as soon as he told me that tale I no longer showered in our master bedroom. ***Shudder.***

But hey – it’s all gone now! After sifting through so many options, we settled on a tile that we would take throughout the entire bathroom and bedroom. I am SO happy with how it turned out. The style is called “wine barrel,” which I found appropriate for me. There are hints of gray, blue, and green throughout the wood-like tile. I am slightly obsessed. After just a few weeks of having the floor in place, I can already vouch for how much cooler in temperature it feels in our bedroom, how much easier it is to clean, and how much cleaner it just FEELS in general in the room. Whew!

Let’s not forget about the shower. Be still, my heart. We were able to take the ceiling up to meet the rest of the room’s level – a bit more than a foot of extra space! I picked out a 12″ x 24″ white tile with a leaf-like pattern on it. When pieced together properly, it created a continuous pattern. The grout lines are barely even there – you can’t tell unless you get up close.

For the shower floor, we were lucky to find that our floor tile was offered in a mosaic tile as well. That decision was easy to make!

Now, this picture doesn’t include the final piece of the puzzle – the shower door! We had a glass door installed that swings in and out instead of back and forth on a track like the previous one. It is sleek, clean, and is barely noticeable. We are getting a water softener/conditioner installed, and I have my squeegee on hand to make sure this glass stays absolutely perfect.

The bathroom vanity is a DIY project my mother and I took on, and I could not be happier about the final result! I am going to show some more detail shortly, but in the meantime just enjoy! Of course, at this point our mirror was not yet hung over the sink, so I’ll have to follow up with another glamor shot in the near future.

All in all, I am SO happy with the before and after of our bedroom/bathroom! It feels like an entirely new space. Of course, these pictures only show a sneak preview of the room before we added the furniture and decor back in. I have a few things I’m working on to show (changing out the hanging light by the bathroom, revamping our headboard for our bed, etc.), but you’ll have to tune back in for those!

Have you undergone a home renovation in the past? What did you take on?
