French 75 Cocktail for #SundaySupper

French 75 Cocktail

I can hardly believe that 2014 is about to come to a close. It seems like just yesterday I was reflecting back on 2013 and making my plans and goals for this year. And as this calendar year is about to expire, there are still a few things I have been hoping to accomplish beforehand. One of them is to make a classic cocktail I’ve been craving: the French 75 Cocktail.

Here’s the thing: when it comes to creating cocktails at home I definitely tend to lean toward the simpler side. I don’t want to mess with 100 different complicated ingredients. Right off the bat, the French 75 fits the bill. You probably already have everything on-hand in your kitchen, with only four simple ingredients it isn’t too difficult! And even though it is simple to make, the presentation is oh so fun – who doesn’t like feeling fancy with a fluted glass in hand? And the flavor is just what I like: it’s light but flavorful. You get the tart bite of the lemon, but it is softened out by the sparkling wine. The hints of gin that forms the base of the cocktail is a lovely note as well!

I have sampled some French 75s at various restaurants throughout the year, and they have always been a favorite. They’re crisp, sparkling, and festive! The recipe is a classic, but I’ve seen various versions; some use more gin. Some use simple syrup in the cocktail, some just use superfine sugar in the shaker. Overall, the flavor profile remains the same. Anyway, I’ve been craving one for while now, and with the New Year about to arrive, a sparkling wine/champagne cocktail seems like the perfect way to toast to 2015. Am I right? So, I’m quenching my thirst for this particular recipe today, and perhaps you will too…serve one of these pretty concoctions at your New Year’s Eve celebration!
